Attaching Ceramic Portraits
to an Existing Headstone

It is of EXTREME importance that you do not attempt to install the ceramic photo until the headstone is warm and dry. Also, you should select a time when the weather will be warm and dry for a few days to allow the silicone sealer and adhesive mounting tape sufficient time to adhere to the granite. Above 60 degrees Fahrenheit is preferable.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
· Strong 2 Sided Adhesive Tape (RECOMMENED: Scotch 1 in. x 37-1/2 ft. Indoor/Outdoor Mounting Tape $15.75 per roll on HomeDepot.com)
· CLEAR 100% Silicon Sealer (RECOMMENDED: Swan Corporation Silicone Caulk in Clear $8.15 per tube on HomeDepot.com)
· Caulking Gun
· Razor Blade
· Damp Cloth
· Ruler/Measuring Tape
· Duck Tape/Electrical tape (optional)

DIRECTIONS:
1. Clean the headstone with water and rubbing alcohol and let dry completely.

2. Place the indoor mounting tape on the outer indented area of the back of the ceramic photo (see diagram on the left for details), leaving the backing of the tape in place for now.

3. Measure and center the ceramic photo where you would like it to go. Measure carefully as removing and remounting the ceramic photo will lessen the holding power of the adhesive in the mounting tape. If desired, you may use small pieces of duck tape or electrical tape to create place markers around the area where you will be placing the ceramic photo, just make sure the tape is will not be underneath the ceramic once installed.

4. Now that you are ready to place the ceramic, peel back the backing on the indoor mounting tape covering the back of the picture. Then firmly press it against the headstone and hold it there for a minute. Remove duct tape/electrical tape markers if used.

5. Insert silicone sealer into caulking gun. Hold the gun at a slight angle and carefully fill in the space between the outer edge of the photo and the headstone.

6. Pull away from the bead slightly as you squeeze out the caulk, rather than push into it, which can be very messy. Use just enough silicone to do the job. (Experiment with the flow of the silicone sealer on a scrap of wood or cardboard. You may find that you’ll need less of a bead than you think.)

7. Use your finger to gently smooth the silicone around the edge of the ceramic photo.

8. Use a damp towel or rag to clean off any excess silicone. Once the silicone dries, carefully remove additional excess with a razor blade.
